A Useful Gift for Christmas

Every year as winter rolls around we can find ourselves in the familiar position of struggling with what to get people for their Christmas presents. Sometimes a relative or loved one will let you know exactly what they want and this can be very helpful and enable you to cut down on the amount of time spent trawling the high street for the perfect gift. Often you are required to pick a gift for someone that you may not know so well and this can be especially difficult; many workplaces operate a secret Santa gift exchange and it can be problematic to find a suitable gift within the specified amount of money.

Sometimes the best type of gift is one that people can get a lot of use out of and will help them during the cold winter months; waterproof hats or comfy blankets are popular choices as they can be used straight away to help keep warm. Waterproof hats come in many different designs and there are styles available to suit every budget and taste; if you have a secret Santa gift that you need to buy this Christmas then perhaps consider a functional gift such as this as opposed to the usual chocolates or bottle of wine.

Often, with a secret Santa, there will be a price limit specified to help ensure no one pays too much for a present and that it is affordable for everyone to take part in. When buying presents for family members or partners however it can sometimes be difficult to budget for everything you need to get and it can be hard to make your money stretch to accommodate everyone that you need to buy for. This doesn’t mean that you should become disheartened. You can still impress people with the gifts you buy for them even of you do not have a large amount of money to spend; most people value thoughtful gifts, such as waterproof hats, far more than a lavish present that does not require much effort to buy. Also, the way you decorate your presents can help make the most of them; by taking time to wrap your presents attractively and personalise them for each individual it can help to demonstrate the level of thought and care that you have put in to your presents and can make them far more meaningful.

If you have concerns regarding Christmas then it might be a good idea to speak to members of your family and see if you can all agree upon a set amount to be spent on presents; you will most likely find that other family members will welcome the discussion and happily stick to price limit that everyone can afford.

Why to Look Online for Car Covers

You will probably already feel that it is very important to protect your investment when you buy a car and if this is the case then you will have weighed up your options.  In an ideal world a garage is a great place to store your car when you are not using it but the problem is that we don’t all have a garage and building one will probably cost more than your car.  A lot of us are using are garages as extra storage space and don’t have room to park our car in there every night so what is the alternative?  Well car covers are a cheap and easy way to give your car the ultimate protection. But where can you buy them?

These days, when most of us want to buy something, the first place we head is our computer so we can check out prices online and see where they are available.  Well you will be pleased to know that when it comes to car covers, the internet is still the place to go.  That is not to say that you cannot buy car covers anywhere else.  However, with more choice online and usually cheaper prices, it is no wonder that most people will choose to buy their car covers online.

One of the main reasons for looking for car covers online is that it is so convenient.  You do not even have to leave the comfort of your own home or even get dressed if you don’t want to.  And the great thing about online stores is that they never close so you can go shopping at three o’clock in the morning if you wish.  If you find that you can’t sleep and want to start browsing the online stores for items, then there is nothing stopping you.

Online sellers don't have the same overheads as your traditional bricks and mortar store and this is one of the main reasons why they can sell their car covers at cheaper prices.  With so much competition online as well, stores are forced to keep their prices low in order to get the customers.  This all makes the internet a buyer’s market and it would be madness not to check out what is available here before stepping foot outside your door.

Traditional retail stores are limited in what they can sell because of the fact that they will only have a certain amount of storage space to stock items.  This is not the case for online sellers as many of them will order direct from the wholesaler once they receive an order.  Many online sellers have an arrangement with the wholesaler for the goods to be shipped directly to the customer so the online seller need never store any items.  That is why it pays to look for car covers online.

Buying a Vacuum Cleaner Sucks

When it comes to buying a vacuum cleaner, stand by for myriad choices. There are loads of different brands, sizes, shapes and utilities. Make a list of what you need in one of these vacuum cleaners by deciding:

  • Ease of moving as in from downstairs to upstairs

  • Weight

  • Attachments needed

  • Length of cord

  • Cost

  • Durability

  • Will it clean hardwoods as well as carpets

  • Upright - usually more powerful but heavier

  • Canister - more convenient and lighter

  • Broom - ultra light but with less suction

  • Hand held - great for smaller jobs such as cleaning blinds or behind things

  • HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) certified - has a closed filtering system and is best for allergy sufferers

  • Power of the motor

  • Bagless - has a plastic removable container that collects debris instead of a toss away paper bag

An upright vacuum cleaner is pushed in front of you and is on wheels. They normally have many different attachments that are integrated to the upright portion of the cleaner which does add to the weight of the machine however having them all in one spot lessens the chance of losing the nozzles and brushes. Uprights have a tendency to be bulky and pretty heavy, although they provide a great deal of suction power and so are quite effective and efficient.

A canister or cylinder type is pulled behind you on wheels. They too have several different kinds of nozzles and brushes. Since the suction apparatus is not connected directly to the unit, a canister is easier to use as it can access hard to reach areas like corners and stairs and they are great for sucking up those pesky cobwebs that appear overnight. Spending a tad bit more money will allow you to buy a canister vacuum that is multifunctional because it not only sucks up dust and dirt but can attack liquid spill too. Some of the models have a reverse blower so it can be easier to unclog filled hoses. They are also good for fluffing when reversed.

A hand held vacuum cleaner is a great little appliance to have for those immediate needs and is quite a bit more manageable than the previous two, but is really an adjunct to cleaning tools. It would be difficult to have only this kind of vacuum as it is really only good for stairs, behind furniture and the interior of your car.

Some of the newer models have reinvented the vacuum cleaner by placing one large ball type wheel on them so they can easily navigate around furniture and such. There are also vacuums that drive themselves like what we used to see in futuristic cartoons. Of course these are normally out of the price range for the average person.

Decorating With Oak Furniture

Decorating your home to achieve a specific style is a unique experience for each individual home owner. Some prefer a traditional, more continental style while others prefer something more modern and Art Deco. Regardless of your tastes, there are a variety of oak furniture options suitable for decorating your home. Of course, your furniture is more than just mere decoration, but finding the right furniture to fit the mood and style you're after is a huge bonus. One of the reasons people love oak so much is the fact that it's versatile enough to fit in with just about anything.

Red Oak furniture works extremely well in traditional environments because of its rich, dark colour and intricate textures. An elegant, formal dining room with a red oak table presents a stunning look for your dinner parties, holiday gatherings, and other formal dining experiences. Imagine sitting at such a table wearing your finest evening gown or suit, complete with your elegant china, flatware, and crystal. The picture is made complete with some candles and a nice place setting.

In the bedroom you might prefer a more casual and rustic feeling. That's okay because White Oak is a great material for bedroom furniture. A matching bed frame, chest of drawers, and end tables provide tasteful simplicity with long-lasting durability. Unfinished white oak is an especially great candidate for the bedroom if it's been bleached. The bleaching process evens out the tone and colour of the wood while still allowing the grain to be seen. A bedroom furnished in White Oak furniture is a sight to behold.

Green Oak is a great option for the conservatory or living area because of its unique ageing properties. It generally takes Green Oak four to five years to fully mature, and it's not uncommon for annual coats of finish to be applied, on top of one another, during this ageing process. As Green Oak matures it takes on a unique look unlike most other words we see. Green Oak furniture will set your conservatory or parlour apart from the homes of your friends and family.

Other varieties, like Golden and Belgian Oak, offer their own unique characteristics that might be suitable in certain rooms of your home. Many species also work well in offices, too. The point is oak furniture is versatile enough in colour, style, and texture that appropriate pieces can be found to complement your decorating style. Oak is also long-lasting and durable, so any pieces you purchase will last well into the future with proper care. With Oak furniture, you can't go wrong. In fact, some would go so far as to say that you can only do right with it.

Laminate Flooring and Other Easy DIY Projects

Spring will be upon us before you know it and that's the time for DIY projects around the home. Such projects can spruce up your house, make you feel better about where you live, and even increase the value of your property. Even if you're not handy, there are several easy DIY projects you can tackle this spring with just a little bit of knowledge and some effort. Three of those projects are installing laminate flooring, caulking the bathroom, and painting.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is an economical alternative to real wood flooring or ceramic tiles. It's true that you can tell the difference just by looking at it, regardless of what the laminate manufacturers tell you, but if you're working on a limited budget laminate is the way to go. Thankfully, it's not difficult to install. Some laminates "float" freely on top of your existing floor so there's no need for adhesive. Those that do require adhesive can be laid down just as quickly.

When you go to your DIY store be sure to consult with a salesperson about all the available options. He will be able to guide you to the best choice for your situation, as well as provide installation instructions. Some stores will go so far as to provide you with personal consultation throughout the entire installation process. Regardless, if you can accurately measure and make some cuts, you can install laminate flooring in a single room in about half a day.

Caulking the Bathroom

Bathroom caulk tends to discolour and encourage the growth of mould, making for a very poor appearance. The good news is that caulk peels off very easily and can be replaced in just a few minutes. To remove the old caulk, soften it with water using a spray bottle and let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, using a screwdriver or knife, lift up the caulk at one corner and pull it away. In most cases you should be able to pull up the entire bead, all the way down wall. Just remember to clean the area with rubbing alcohol or an appropriate bathroom cleaner before laying down a new bead.

Painting

Painting is something all of us can do; in fact just about every home owner has done it at least once. A fresh coat of paint is a great way to add new life to your home during the spring, and if you're selling, paint is almost a necessity. Just be sure that you don't skip the priming process if you want the best quality job. Primer is especially important on bare walls or when applying lighter paint over a darker colour.

Engaging a Non-Reader with a Photography Monthly Subscription!

It’s true that the older a non-reader becomes, the more likely he or she is to disengage with the act of reading. It’s also true that to become a good, or even just an efficient reader, requires daily practice. Clearly there is a conflict between these two sets of circumstances which perpetuates a cycle of low self-esteem, frustration and unwillingness when it comes to reading that, by the time the person is a teen or young adult, can be really hard to recover from. However, spend a few moments considering how such a simple thing as a Photography Monthly subscription was enough to break the cycle for one non-reader!

We all know that being unable to read effectively does not make a person unskilled generally, and this particular non-reader was extremely artistic and skilled in the area of photography, being able to master complex cameras without reading the dense advice manuals that invariably accompanied them, but by trial, error, experience and instinct. He was also able to compose fantastic photographs through the lens, his own minds-eye and a great perception of light, colour and effects –in short, he did not need to read to be able to successfully and creatively take breathtaking images.

However, to set up working for himself he did need to be able to read and the thought of practising daily with the ‘Janet and John’ type tomes of his youth was enough to put him off the idea of ever being able to work for himself. Until we hit upon the idea of taking out a Photography Monthly subscription and practising reading skills by building photography knowledge and expertise! The benefits of using the magazine in this way were three fold:

  • Individuals with weak reading skills spend a significant amount of time de-coding text initially and read with a reduced level of understanding at this stage. This makes it difficult to follow a story, as the mechanical process of the act of reading overrides the story telling process of the book. However, a magazine is easier to dip into for a designated time daily to read an interesting snippet, without having to remember where you were or what happened last in the story –just pick a bit you like the look of and off you go, much more motivating.

  • Photography Monthly offers highly visual content with a wealth of image-rich pages interspersed with text rather than vice versa. Additionally, the visuals offer clues as to the content and context of the text, which helps to support the reading process and gives the poor reader a better chance at independent reading.

  • Because the non-reader was a self-taught ‘expert’ in the field of photography, matching the written form of familiar words with the words he uses every day did not take him long to master, suddenly making whole sentences much more accessible: where sentences contain friendly, familiar words, it is easier to make sense of the unknown words.

It really wasn’t long before this extremely poor reader was able to read quite complex, technical sentences with a degree of understanding and began to really look forward to receiving his new Photography Monthly subscription issue every month. If you have an adult non-reader in the family, it’s an approach that we’d highly recommend.
