Buying a Vacuum Cleaner Sucks
When it comes to buying a vacuum cleaner, stand by for myriad choices. There are loads of different brands, sizes, shapes and utilities. Make a list of what you need in one of these vacuum cleaners by deciding:
-
Ease of moving as in from downstairs to upstairs
-
Weight
-
Attachments needed
-
Length of cord
-
Cost
-
Durability
-
Will it clean hardwoods as well as carpets
-
Upright - usually more powerful but heavier
-
Canister - more convenient and lighter
-
Broom - ultra light but with less suction
-
Hand held - great for smaller jobs such as cleaning blinds or behind things
-
HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) certified - has a closed filtering system and is best for allergy sufferers
-
Power of the motor
-
Bagless - has a plastic removable container that collects debris instead of a toss away paper bag
An upright vacuum cleaner is pushed in front of you and is on wheels. They normally have many different attachments that are integrated to the upright portion of the cleaner which does add to the weight of the machine however having them all in one spot lessens the chance of losing the nozzles and brushes. Uprights have a tendency to be bulky and pretty heavy, although they provide a great deal of suction power and so are quite effective and efficient.
A canister or cylinder type is pulled behind you on wheels. They too have several different kinds of nozzles and brushes. Since the suction apparatus is not connected directly to the unit, a canister is easier to use as it can access hard to reach areas like corners and stairs and they are great for sucking up those pesky cobwebs that appear overnight. Spending a tad bit more money will allow you to buy a canister vacuum that is multifunctional because it not only sucks up dust and dirt but can attack liquid spill too. Some of the models have a reverse blower so it can be easier to unclog filled hoses. They are also good for fluffing when reversed.
A hand held vacuum cleaner is a great little appliance to have for those immediate needs and is quite a bit more manageable than the previous two, but is really an adjunct to cleaning tools. It would be difficult to have only this kind of vacuum as it is really only good for stairs, behind furniture and the interior of your car.
Some of the newer models have reinvented the vacuum cleaner by placing one large ball type wheel on them so they can easily navigate around furniture and such. There are also vacuums that drive themselves like what we used to see in futuristic cartoons. Of course these are normally out of the price range for the average person.
